THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM addressing the following to Major Richard B. Reese: Dear Sir: Congratulations on the hard work that you are doing, in maintaining and up-keeping these correctional institutions, as I know it is not an easy task.
I read your letter to the editor, Re: 'Mentally ill in prison' dated Monday, April 17, and was so impressed at the various achievements that you have gained over the years. I want you to keep up the good work.
I have concerns about those inmates that were incarcerated under the Governor-General's pleasure. My questions to you, sir, are as follows: What will become of those who are there for 10 years and over? When will they be released? Are they being taught any form of skills training or, in other words, is there a skills training programme for these inmates to achieve a measure of correction to apply themselves to the outside world when they are released?
I am concerned because of my friend who has had a son at the Spanish Town Prison for more than 10 years. She is so stressed as nothing seems to be happening. Could you please shed some light on this for me?
I am, etc.,
JENNE JONES
