DURING HER 15 years working in the medical field, Velor McDaniel
thought she had seen it all. But, last Saturday evening, the Kingston-born,
London-based nurse got a shocker as she attempted to save the life of five-month-old
Dominique Clarke at the scene of an accident along Highway 2000 in Clarendon.
Ms. McDaniel was travelling along the highway when she saw a crowd gathered about half mile from the toll booth in Clarendon. She reversed to find out what was happening.
"I saw the baby on the ground, in a pool of blood, with some white substance running out of his head. He was not moving. What struck me was that nobody was offering any assistance. I felt the baby's hand and got a pulse," said Ms. McDaniel who is here on vacation. She told The Gleaner that eventually a man came and took up the child. And, with the assistance of Senior Superintendent Calvin Benjamin, Ms. McDaniel took Dominique and the five other injured persons in her car and rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital.
AMBULANCE
They also called police control, requesting an ambulance to meet them along the way.
"While in the car, his heart stopped a few times and I held him in my lap and resuscitated him. His heart was in and out of rhythm, but I did what I had to do and he responded," she said.
By the time they reached the outskirts of Spanish Town, an ambulance with only porters and no medical personnel met them and took the injured. The infant died shortly after reaching the hospital.
