Father and son team, Nicholas (left) and Winston White, are both fanatics for self-defence and fitness. They are seen here at the Boulevard Fitness Centre in which the senior White is one of three partners.
THE PHRASE "like father like son" is often used to describe instances where a son chooses a similar path to that of his father, in terms of profession, vocation or leisure activities. Occasionally the roles are reversed, and it is actually the son who is the pioneer in the family, with his sire following suit.
Nicholas White began studying karate in 2001 at Ningen Martial Arts in Havendale, and has since advanced to the ranks of senior brown belt. It was by the encouragement of his father, Winston White, that he took on the sport - though the elder White was not then a practitioner of the Japanese art form. Between laughs Mr. White says, "He was always much slimmer than I was at the same age and I would prefer that if he fell in a situation where he's challenged he could defend himself."
And so he encouraged his son to take up karate as a sport. Nicholas has advanced and his father is just now going into
formal training as his son did.
