Miracle Man hard to oppose
published: Saturday | April 15, 2006

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

Miracle Man, running at odds of 9-2 with Florida-based Jamaican jockey Allen Maragh aboard, romps the 27th Red Stripe Superstakes over 2000 metres at Caymanas Park on Saturday November 12, 2005. Miracle Man went from post-to-post, scoring by six lengths over Distinctly Irish (right) with Winston Griffiths abaord and fourth place Good Company, ridden by CHarles Hussey. THE REIGNING Horse of the Year, MIRACLE MAN, goes for his second win from as many starts this season when he faces four opponents in the graded stakes feature for the Legal Light Trophy over 1820m at Cay-manas Park today.

This marks the first leg of the two-day Easter Racing Carnival, which culminates on Monday.

The Legal Light Trophy, which had to be abandoned on April 8 due to insufficient entries, has not surprisingly attracted MIRACLE MAN, who will be opposed by four opponents, all from the stables of trainer Anthony 'Baba' Nunes. The classy four-year-old colt by Law Of The Sea out of Hya shoulders the crushing impost of 60.5kg (133lb), but this will certainly not deter him.

Trained by the legendary 'Hall of Famer' Allan 'Billy' Williams for popular owner Joseph 'Fudgie' Duany, MIRACLE MAN put away a good field in the Eros Trophy over 1400 metres when making his seasonal debut on February 18.

He made all in fast slips on that occasion, outspeeding the then favourite CLOCK WORK in the backstretch and holding on well to thwart a late run from FORMALLY GOLD.

Although asked to carry top weight, the 2005 Derby and Superstakes winner should prove equal to the task with Florida-based jockey Allen 'Bungo John' Maragh again in the saddle.

The massive colt is built to carry heavy imposts and despite the claims of the 2003 Superstakes winner PITTACUS, who was behind him (4th) in the Eros Trophy, MIRACLE MAN (working well) is hard to oppose in this small field.

He represents the class horse of the field and with the extended trip more to his liking, should turn back the early advances of lightly weighted DON LIMPIO under lightweight jockey Wesley Henry and hold PITTACUS under champion jockey Brian Harding at bay up the lane.

The round five Cesario Cup for native bred maiden three-year-old colts and geldings has attracted seven starters and here it should come down to a straight fight between RED LION and PISON.

To my mind the Ken Mattis-trained RED LION will prove hard to beat providing he leaves the gates promptly, with former champion jockey Percy Williams now taking the ride.

LOUIS HITCHINS MEMORIAL

The Louis Hitchins Memorial Cup (claiming $290,000 - $260,000) over 1600 metres should come down to a straight fight between BLOW WIND BLOW and the down-in-class MEDIC ON BOARD to be ridden by Robert Reid and former champion Trevor Simpson, respectively.

BLOW WIND BLOW, who has been pretty active at exercise, catches my fancy from the convenient mark of 51.0kg.

Nine have been declared for the City of Kingston Centenary Cup high claiming (again over a mile) and here it should be an intriguing contest among the trio of RIZZI LEE, THE MINISTER and Hussey's mount TOBAGO.

My idea of the winner is RIZZI LEE (Simpson up), who finished second to the out-of-class ROYAL COMMAND on the last two occasions and is down in class today.

Other firm fancies on the card are ROYAL KINGDOM in the 4th race, MAJOR MAYER in the 5th following his fourth place finish in the recent 2000 Guineas, STEAD GOLD in the 8th and SIR CHARLES to stave off APACHE BRAVE in the nightpan.
