Thomas building a vibe
published: Saturday | April 15, 2006

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

BIGGA AND Wata have extended a corporate hand to the community of Arnett Gardens this Easter weekend.

The brands have combined with former Arnett Gardens footballer, Alex Thomas, to put on a weekend of fun days at Torrington Park that will feature a netball competition today, followed by an under-15 football competition tomorrow and on Monday. Action starts at 10:00 each morning.

The preliminary rounds of the football tournament will take place tomorrow with semi-finals and a final being held on Monday.

Speaking to The Gleaner Thomas, who has put his promising football career on hold to pursue a tertiary education at the G.C. Foster College, says that the commu-nity is in need of a jump start to harmonise it.

"Sports has always been something that can get the people together," he said.

"So we have put on this fun day, mostly for the youths, so we can show the community what togetherness is," he added.

While Thomas who played in the Under-17 World Cup Finals for Jamaica has been transferred to Harbour View, he has not forgotten his roots and thinks if he can make a difference he should start within his community.

"This is where I'm from and if I can't try to make a difference here then there is no real point to life," Thomas reasoned.

While Thomas is the brainchild behind the move, he has made sure to thank the sponsors, without whom he says the activities wouldn't be possible.

"I have to thank Zachary Harding from Bigga for doing this for us. This shows that Jamaicans everywhere want our future to be brighter," he said.

"And as a matter of fact, that is why the football competition will be Under-15, because we have to deal with the youths, they are the future," he ended.
