THE EDITOR, Sir:MR. DERRICK Simons, in his letter 'A cry for women' on April 11, exhibits what seems to be a typical solution to a problem for us Jamaicans. We write to the paper and call on the minister. I have another suggestion.
As the chairman of his district, get some men and non-lactating women and go down to the health centre. There is nothing demeaning with breast feeding out in the fresh air and enjoying nature, if someone would only clean up the other "bodily functions" from the road bank.
WORK DAY
So if the area is cleaned and another area designated for bodily releases, the ladies will have it nicer while you wait for Kingston to answer your letter. If they feel energetic enough, they could even dig a little pit latrine around the back.
Next week they can tackle the building, have a work day and clean-up the health centre. Maybe the church could donate two tins of paint from next week's collection and nice up the place.
That way the women need not be demeaned nor continue to suffer the loss of dignity whenever they go to the doctor. Don't men see the doctor in Stock Farm? Or are they used to living without dignity?
I am, etc.,
