Mis-perception of sex
published: Saturday | April 15, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

RECENT PUBLISHED comments show that the problem we are having as a nation in relation to sex is not so much a preoccupation with, but a mis-perception of sex. It is the kind of mindset which says "sex is just to satisfy a physical need" which results in the many negative statements and actions we hear and see in relation to sexual activity.

The reality is, sex is far more than a physical activity. The Bible refers to our bodies as the temple of God (1 Corinthians 6:19). Marriage is the proper context in which persons are to engage in sex (Matthew 19: 5-6). In 1 Corinthians 6: 15-17, Paul explains that persons who have sexual relations are united into "one flesh".

EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL

When we talk about sex therefore, we are talking about something that is not just physical, but something which is very emotional and deeply spiritual. Sex is sacred, and God used a large portion of the Bible to show us that it is not something to be taken lightly, as it, among others things, has the potential to deeply affect our relationship with Him.

DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED

Fellow Christians, we cannot, based on our understanding of God and the way He calls us to live, accommodate the moral relativism that pervades our society. We should not be intimidated by those "enlightened secularists" who intimate that we are narrow-minded because of our refusal to bow to their philosophy. Sex is a blessed gift from God to be enjoyed in the context of marriage (man and woman) and should not be reduced to basic animal instinct. We are being ludicrous when we, overtly or covertly, commodify sex and still expect responsible sexual behaviour from persons.

I am, etc.,
