THE BISHOP of the Diocese of Haiti, the Rt. Reverend Jean Zache Duracin, will be the guest of the 136th Synod of the Anglican Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands which takes place April 18-21.
Bishop Duracin will be in the island from Wednesday, April 19- Thursday, April 20, during which time he will preach at the annual service of the Jamaica Church Missionary Society, an arm of the Jamaican Diocese.
Age 59, he was consecrated in June 1993 and is Dean of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Port-au-Prince. He is a noted linguist who is engaged in international partnerships to promote education and employment in Haiti.
He is described as "committed to economic and academic equality" and works with various cultural and ecumenical groups to further the goals of education, employment and housing for fellow Haitians, an ideal which he continues to uphold despite the various cycles of political and economic changes in his country. A quote attributed to him says: "Happiness is not getting what you want, it's wanting what you've got."
Other features of the synod will be the opening service on Tuesday April 18 at the St. James Parish Church, Montego Bay, where the Lord Bishop the Rt. Reverend Dr. Alfred Reid will deliver the first part of his charge on the theme: 'Working with God in Testing Times.'
The business sessions will be held Wednesday-Friday at the Starfish Trelawny Hotel.
On Thursday night, A.J. Nicholson, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, will address the assembly on the topic of the Bill of Rights, which has been the subject of much debate.
