Brown smashes Shield record
published: Wednesday | March 29, 2006

ST. CATHERINE High's Nicholas Brown rewrote the record books yesterday with a majestic triple century against 'A' League champions Tarrant in their Grace Shield Premier League semi-final match at St. John's Road.

Brown's 337 broke the record of Eltham's Schacoya Thomas' 324 not out who, ironically, did it against St. Catherine in the Grace Shield Premier League last year at Melbourne Oval.

Thomas last year broke Carlton Baugh's urban individual record of 280 and Holmwood's Ricardo Powell's Jamaica high school record of 306.

The right-handed opening batsman was elated with his achievement.

"I feel good to be the new record holder ... I was really surprised, I never knew I would erase the record," said an overjoyed Brown who was scoring his first century at the local high school level.

"When I was at 200, it was at that time I decided to go for this record and just take it from there," said Brown, who was one of the bowlers last year when Thomas got the record.

"I feel special, my family and friends are happy for me," said Brown whose only century before came in the Gary Sobers Invitational in Barbados last year.

NICKNAME

Brown, who is nicknamed 'Sarwan', batted for more than 7 1/2 hours in which time he faced 492 deliveries, hitting 44 fours and seven sixes, and shared in an impressive 541-run partnership for the third wicket with Rohan Franklyn who got 208.

Franklyn, who joined Brown at the crease with St. Catherine on 138 for two, batted responsibly while hitting 23 fours.

However, both batsmen left within three runs as St. Catherine declared their innings at 677-4.

Final scores: St. Catherine 677-4 declared (Brown 337, Franklyn 208); Tarrant 133 (Ryan Bennett 4-42) and 123 (Jermaine Grant 3-33).

St. Catherine (five points) won the match by an innings and 421 runs. However, they failed to advance as Eltham (five points), who were idle yesterday, had got the better of them in the head-to-head clash last week.

At Old Hope Road: JC beat Meadowbrook on first innings to move to six points, one more than Mona.

Replying to Meadowbrook's 143, JC, Oliver Walker, 179 (18x4, 1x6) and Marc Robinson (80), shared in a superb 214-run second wicket stand to carry JC to 356-3 at the end .

JC will meet defending champs Eltham in the three-day final which starts on Monday at Melbourne.
