New University of the West Indies (UWI) Guild head
published: Wednesday | March 29, 2006

DAYTON CAMPBELL, a third-year Faculty of Medical Science student at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, is the new president-elect of the Guild of Students.

Mr. Campbell, who contested the elections on Monday with three competitors, said he was delighted to represent the thousands of students enrolled at the institution.

"I am overwhelmed with joy and very elated about the victory," he told The Gleaner yesterday.

The 23-year-old who succeeds Richard Toomer, outgoing president, will assume office April 1.

He has already identified several areas of focus, with student activism being given priority.

"I would like to give the students a voice. I do not want Jamaica to hear from us only when we want our tuition fees to be reduced," he said.

Mr. Campbell's plans include an inner-city library reservicing Project to assist with the refurbishing of libraries and the implementation of homework centres in communities; and lobbying for degrees to be more practical by giving students more work experience and internships.
