Western Jamaica to get university
published: Wednesday | March 29, 2006

PRIME MINISTER P.J. Patterson on Monday outlined plans for the construction of a new university in western Jamaica and the construction of lifestyle villages by the National Housing Trust (NHT).

The Prime Minister made the announcement as he addressed the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House for the last time.

Mr. Patterson said the institution would be called the University of Western Jamaica and would be located at Mountpelier in St. James. He said the institution will be established at a cost of US$15 million (J$1 billion) and would focus on the teaching of English and Spanish, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Accounting, Management and Entertainment and Culture, among other disciplines.

LIFESTYLE VILLAGE

Mr. Patterson said a lifestyle village, as announced last year, would be developed to target the tourism sector and Jamaicans living abroad.

He said the NHT has acquired 429 acres of lands at Barrett Hall in western Jamaica to start the project.
