ST. THOMAS must position itself to take advantage of opportunities arising from the 2007 World Cup, the SDC's regional director, Courtney Brown, told stakeholders in Morant Bay on Thursday.
"(The parish) stands to benefit and must be positioning itself to take up the opportunity accruing from the potential that will come with the island hosting its share of the World Cup events," Brown said.
He told a group of local representatives that mediums should be established to act as the authority to mobilise and galvanise the parish's National Volunteers Programme a feature of the Jamaicanisation of Cricket World Cup 2007.
In coming to bat for the parish and its potential, Brown said there was no reason St. Thomas could not be a centre for heritage, culture and healing and he implored all the major players and citizens to join the rally for their neck of the woods to be a point of focus and interest.
The SDC regional official told the meeting that with all of Kingston's hotels fully booked for the period of the World Cup, St. Thomas should be preparing to host extra numbers of visitors.
He also pointed to the rich history of the parish and the accompanying culture "which many would find fascinating".
