Portia needs a formidable team
published: Sunday | March 12, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Prime Minister-designate Portia Simpson Miller should direct immediately all efforts and energy to nation-building. I know this type of rhetoric sounds familiar, but whichever way Jamaica needs serious constructive building.

Minister Simpson Miller is encouraged at this time to harness her fellow contenders for the presidency to work together and with them to form a formidable team. At this moment I am of the view that our nation needs a major overhaul and it will need someone with resolve Omar; someone with consistency Peter; someone with charm, charisma and ability to lead Portia, someone who is with the people Karl.

BRUCE GOLDING

This is just a perspective and yes it is just a matter of opinion but if one looks a bit deeper it is only clear that Jamaica needs these four individuals along with others to work as a formidable team. On the other side of the coin Jamaica also needs Bruce Golding, the James Roberts and the Chris Tuftons to name a few.

In the United Kingdom we are watching, supporting and are encouraged by democracy in display in respect of the leadership contest. One may quickly glance at the Conservative Party with the recent elected leader, the vibrant David Cameron. David quickly has capitalised on the previous aspiring leaders and previous leaders' talents. His one-time leadership rival Ken Clarke who was also a former Chancellor of the Exchequer is chairing a democracy task force. Previous leader Ian Duncan Smith is overseeing a social justice policy group and he has returned William Hague one of the great orators at the dispatch box back on the front bench with responsibility for foreign affairs and last but not least, the Tories have brought back Tarzan (Michael Heseltine) to tame the urban jungle. His responsibility will be in charge of a new task force on the cities. If you can recall he was Deputy Prime Minister and was one of the key architects in the downfall of Margaret Thatcher.

FOLLOW SUIT

Similarly Minister Simpson Miller may have to follow suit but should ensure that her authority is not compromised by undermining factors or factions.

Fellow colleagues and myself of Facilitators For a Better Jamaica (FFBJ) wish Dr. Peter Philips, Dr. Omar Davies and Dr. Karl Blythe all the best and we are truly grateful to the delegates of the PNP who were sensitive to the mood of the nation and voted accordingly in choosing Portia Simpson Miller to be the next and first female Prime Minister of Jamaica. Whatever anyone may say we can truly say this is the right person for Jamaica at this time, and also even more so at this key juncture in our development to full Independence.

FFBJ will be standing in partnership with the Government of Jamaica and will support the Office of the Prime Minister whether it is JLP or PNP. The next Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller will be charting the course of history for the Caribbean and the West Indies.

I am., etc,
