Visa woes for Gutzmore, Martin
published: Thursday | March 9, 2006

( L - R ) GUTZMORE AND MARTIN

MARATHONERS ANDREW Gutzmore and Areita Martin will arrive at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, after their teammates.

The runners did not leave the island as scheduled yesterday as they turned up at the Norman Manley International Airport without visas.

Media liaison officer for Jamaica's Commonwealth Games contingent, Earl Bailey, confirmed the athletes non-departure.

"They (Gutzmore and Martin) were down to travel with the team this morning but when they reached the airport they realised they could not travel through the United States without a visa," Bailey said.

The athletes are scheduled to visit the US embassy in Kingston this morning to try and secure the visas.

"They have been given letters to take to the embassy and will travel as soon as they get their visas," Bailey added.

Efforts to reach Gutzmore and Martin were unsuccessful.

The Gleaner could not get a comment from Garth Gayle, manager of the track and field contingent who left with the team yesterday, to explain the mix-up between the athletes and management.

Meanwhile, other track and field members and the badminton, boxing, cycling, table tennis, swimming, squash and shooting teams departed yesterday.
