THE EDITOR, Sir:
NEVER IN THE HISTORY of the world has an elected official orchestrated or put into action any policy changes the day after an election. Yet there are those who are looking to Ms. Simpson Miller to create such overnight miracles of lowering the national debt, lowering the crime rate, revamping the education system, instituting better housing programmes, etc., even before she has been sworn into office.
We are a people with 'high chests' but we must be mindful to allow Ms. Simpson Miller to effect policy in a timely fashion and with prudence. Mr. Patterson struggled when he first took office and some might argue that he never quite gained his footing.
WE WANT CHANGE
Especially so in these times, it is understandable that EVERY Jamaican wants change and that that change cannot come soon enough, but constant browbeating of the very official that must guide us through and help bring about this change is not the way to go.
Exercise patience and don't be fractious. Hold your demands until after the swearing-in ceremony and Ms. Simpson Miller has had the chance to address the nation. It might prove serendipitous how many of your demands are already on her list of things to tackle as her first order of business.
I am, etc.,
