THE EDITOR, Sir:I WOULD like to list a few facts about a First World country, in this case England.
All citizens on reaching the age of 60 are entitled to a freedom bus pass, which gives you free travel on the buses and tube and on some train journeys, likewise children up to age 15.
All citizens over the age of 60 receive free medical attention, which includes optical as well as dental work etc.
There is never an electricity or water cut, and you pay a standard water rate.
There is also an ombudsman who may intervene if a utility problem arises. He has more power than the OUR.
There is VAT value added tax and some items are exempt.
If a government minister or official commits an indiscretion or misdemeanour he/she, depending on the severity, would resign.
All schooling up to the age of 16 is free.
The roads are in a fit state to drive on, and are prepared efficiently when the need arises.
People everywhere have access to water, and a proper sewage system is in place.
These are only a few of the the benefits. I hope the ministers who are promising Jamaicans frst world status are aware of this.
I am, etc..
