MONA PREP defeated Lannaman's Prep 1-0 in the 2006 Bigga/Locker Room Alberga Cup final at the St. Peter and Paul playfield yesterday.
BEAUTIFUL LONG-RANGE SHOT
Mona, who earlier in the season also claimed the Henriques Knockout title, took the lead in the first minute of play when their captain, Omar Holness, put them in front with a beautiful long-range shot from just inside the centre circle which went straight through the legs of Lannaman's goalkeeper Shakeem Watson and into the back of the net.
Lannaman's mounted a number of attacks and should have equalised in the eighth minute through Oshane Williams but his shot was denied by the crossbar.
Lannaman's dominated the rest of the first half and came close to scoring again through Damion Tully when his 15-yard effort was spectacularly save by Mona goalkeeper Kamal Phillips just before half-time.
EVENLY CONTESTED
The second half was evenly contested with both teams missing a number of chances.
Mona's Kamano Osborne's long-range shot was just tipped over the bar by Phillips. While Lannaman's Lushane Denton's shot just glanced one of the upright posts.
Coach of Mona Prep, Alfred Nelson, said: "This is very special for us because we have been getting support from the school community and it is also special for some of the players who have been in the programme for the past four years."
DISAPPOINTMENT
Meanwhile, coach of the Lannaman's Prep, Everton Russell, was a disappointed man after the game.
"Hats of to Mona ," Russell said. "They came and played hard and they got the victory. We tried our best but it was just oneof those days that we could not get the ball into the back of the net but, again, congratulations to Mona," he said.
