Wolmer's extend win streak
published: Wednesday | February 8, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

WOLMER'S BOYS extended their winning streak in the KFC sponsored ISSA High School Basketball Southern Con-ference to seven games with a 56-46 victory over Excelsior yesterday at the National Stadium courts.

The Heroes Circle side notched its first win of the second round led by a 23 point, 11 rebound performance from Kerron Caine.

His 13-point first quarter effort saw his team comfortably ahead 21-12 at the break.

However, Excelsior were not ready to call it quits against a bulkier Wolmer's line-up and, rallied by their leading scorer Deameatrio Wade who had 20 points and 17 rebounds, looked to claw their way back into the game.

DEFENSIVE INTENSITY

An 11-point second quarter by Wade ensured that they did and by also stepping up their defensive intensity, they outscored Wolmer's 15-10 in the second and 10-8 in the third quarter and with a minute left to go in the third quarter they had cut the lead to 42-39.

"As a coach you know that the game has its ups and downs. We went out and set the tone early and even with their run we still had enough of a cushion to see out the game," was the assessment of Wolmer's coach Howard Harvey.

The heroics of a tiring Wade were not enough to keep his team in the game and though they found themselves within striking distance down 50-44 with a minute left to go, Wolmer's would close out to win comfortably.

" I think we did tremendously well against a team of their size and depth to bring back the game to four, they really did well," said Excelsior coach Rohan Robinson

"At the end of the day endurance got us out, we had basically a six-player rotation and it was not enough," he said. In the day's other game, St. Catherine survived an early scare to get by St George's 69-58. Noel Wright top scored in the encounter with 21 points and six rebounds.
