ACP Shand blames sin for crime
published: Tuesday | January 31, 2006

Devon Evans, Gleaner Writer

OCHO RIOS, St. Ann:

ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER of Police in charge of Area Two, Derrick Shand, said Jamaica's serious crime problem was the result of sin affecting the country.

He said while most people were referring to crime as the greatest problem now affecting the country, it should be more appropriately seen as sin on the land. "Sin is what is affecting this country and if we can do without the fun word, sin in any language is sin," ACP Shand declared.

The assistant commissioner was speaking on Sunday, at a church service to mark the first anniversary of Sandals Grande Ocho Rios.

WALLOWING IN SIN

The service, which kicked off the resort's week of celebratory activities, took place at the St. John's Anglican Church, in Ocho Rios. It was held in honour of the Area Two police, comprising St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland. And, while not stating the reason why the country was wallowing in sin, ACP Shand urged those who claimed to accept God, to pray some more.

PRAY MORE

"And, so if we tend to accept God and ask him to lead us, certainly we need to pray a little more," He added, "Certainly we need to do a little kindness. I am sure that we need Jesus to extend our hands even more to our unfortunate brothers and sisters."

ACP Shand exhorted the congregation of over one hundred police personnel to be always mindful of the life they lived, because at some stage, everybody would be called upon to give an account of their lives.

The week of celebrations at Sandals Grande Ocho Rios to mark their first anniversary will end on Saturday and will include the crowning of Mr & Mrs. Sandals.
