Jamaica must heal from within
published: Monday | January 9, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE yet to find a society that is more capable of true love than our own Jamaica. I refuse to accept the label of 'murder capital of the world' when we all know that right now the murder capital of the world is Iraq.

We have the potential for change and all it takes is the will power. It's like making a strong change in diet; there is no result until you do it. And change is like the body - the glow on the outside is because of being healthy on the inside. Jamaica is sick on the inside, and must heal from the inside to bring it back to health.

Love can be as simple as saying good morning to that person on the street that you always walk past. Just imagine - that is how Jamaica used to be. A motorist could give a stranger a drive on the road and not be afraid. Love was present. Love has been replaced with fear, and fear feeds crime.

We have many people who demonstrate this love by donating food to the poor, running soup kitchens, and generally being constantly on call to help others. Those who cannot help may be in need of help, thus, love is reciprocal and cyclical. Many criminals are lost boys still looking for the love of their mother or father.

I am, etc.,

A.M. ANSARI
