Absent Gayle claims Cricketer of the Year award
published: Friday | December 16, 2005

GAYLE

CHRISTOPHER GAYLE was named Jamaica Cricket Association's (JCA)/Restaurants of Jamaica Cricketer of the Year for the second consecutive year on Wednesday night.

The award, which was handed over to acting Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert in Gayle's absence, was primarily for the left-handed batsman's exploits against South Africa.

It was claimed Gayle did not attend the ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston as he was ordered by his doctor not to leave home because he felt ill.

Gayle scored 317 against the South Africans in May at the Antigua Recreation Ground to record the highest individual score by a Jamaican in Test match history.

During 2005, Gayle played seven Test matches, scoring 329 runs against South Africa in three matches, 102 in two matches against Pakistan and 103 versus Australia in two matches, this for a total of 534 runs at 39.01.

RECORD

In one-day internationals Gayle recorded 563 runs from 17 matches with two centuries, while in three regional Carib Beer matches for Jamaica this year he scored 389 runs at 77.8, including centuries (131 and 150) in both innings of the final against Leewards at Alpart.

Meanwhile, Tamar Lambert copped the Laurie Williams Trophy for the Most Disciplined Jamaica Player; Alton Beckford took the George Headley Trophy for excellence in Youth cricket; Nicholas Austin of Kingston got the G. Roy Williams award for the Most Disciplined Super Cup Player and Manchester's captain, Matthew Sinclair, walked away with the Collie Smith Trophy for his leadership on and off the field.

Dennis Bulli took the E.A. Rae Award as in the opinion of his Jamaica Under-19 colleagues, he set the best examples on and off the field.

The Gleaner Independence Trophy went to Albert Fearon as the umpire making the most outstanding contribution in the season.

Andre Dwyer of Supreme Ventures Super Cup champions Manchester claimed three awards: top wicket taker (56), best bowling (9-103) and most five-wicket hauls (five) while JDF's Kamal Dennis was the Super Cup's top all-rounder and collected the Lindel Wright Trophy.

HIGHEST INDIVIDUAL SCORE

Dennis, who also had the highest individual score - 132, scored 340 runs and took 38 wickets

Boys' Town's Phillip Keating snared two awards in the Red Stripe Championship: most wickets for the O.C. Scott Trophy and he shared the most five-wicket hauls prize with Myron Wilson and Denville McKenzie of Westmoreland and Portland's Carl Brissett.

Brissett was the Red Stripe Championship top all-rounder. He scored 261 runs and took 45 wickets.

The best fielding team was Manchester.

Former Kensington Cricket Club president Vincent Wong got the President's Award.

Manchester won the Super Cup, Westmoreland the Red Stripe Championship, Melbourne the Capital & Credit All-Island Limited-Overs competition, Domtar the Masters Trophy, while G.C. Foster and Westmoreland shared the Junior Cup.
