Digicel donates funds to rural parish councils
published: Friday | December 16, 2005

DIGICEL PRESENTED a cheque for $200,000 to the St Catherine Parish Council earlier this week that will help to defray the costs of the annnual Christmas treat.

Business Development Manager Erica Crawford-Brian said that the "gesture is an honourable one as the aim of Digicel is to assist in every sphere in whichever way they can, and the needy children in Spanish Town and its environs are looked at no differently."

"We have been making the lives of people better, and of such it is a real privilege to assist the St. Catherine Parish Council in its Christmas treat," she concluded.

Mayor of Spanish Town Dr. Andrew Wheatley thanked Digicel for being good corporate citizens.

"We are thankful that businesses still find it necessary to support something positive coming out of Spanish Town, and we appreciate the gesture greatly," he said, adding that in the past, Spanish Town has been identified with many negative actions, but that gestures such as this could signal a change in fortune for the Old Capital.

Secretary/Manager Michael Morris said that it would cost the council about $500,000 to cater for an average of 600 needy children.

SPONSORSHIP PROMISE

The telecommunications company also promised to sponsor other events put on by the parish council in the future.

The St Elizabeth Parish Council also benefited from a $200,000 cheque from Digicel. The cheque was handed over to deputy mayor of Black River, Shirley Myers, who chaired the monthly council meeting held in Black River last week.

Ms Annette Brown of Digicel, who made the presentation, said, "it is Digicel's intention to help people in the community."
