Kingston Harbour bridge proposal gets backing
published: Friday | December 16, 2005

SEVERAL BUSINESS interests and development agencies are backing a proposal for the construction of a bridge across the Kingston Harbour to provide an alternative route to the Norman Manley Airport and Port Royal.

The Port Authority of Jamaica, the Airport Authority of Jamaica (AAJ) and the Kingston Restoration Company are some of the organisations that expressed support for the construction of the bridge at a public forum organised by the Jamaica Institution of Engineers at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston, yesterday.

REDUCE TRAVELLING DISTANCE

The construction of the bridge, they argue, would significantly reduce the travelling distance from Kingston to the airport and boost plans for the redevelopment of downtown Kingston and the history-rich town of Port Royal.

Earl Richards, president of the AAJ, said the new bridge would result in significant economic benefits for both individuals and companies. According to Mr. Richards, the addition of the infrastructure would aid the establishment of time-sensitive services such as couriers and cargo delivery and more importantly, provide an alternative conduit for power and fuel supply to the airport. This, he said, was a requirement of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
