Cover girl remains true to herself

Sunna Gutshalk - CONTRIBUTED

MODELLING IS a far way from teaching or nursing, but Sunna Gutshalk didn't mind giving up her childhood dreams to hit the catwalk.

Sunna was discovered in Pulse's Caribbean Model Search in 2003. It's been only two years since, but Sunna has landed many top campaigns, including appearing on the cover of the Cosmopolitan magazine as well as shooting the recent Alexander McQueen campaign. Alexander McQueen is a famed designer based in London.

"I'm really happy with what I'm doing now, I recently did the Alexander McQueen campaign and I've been running around doing castings. The good thing is that I get to travel and I love doing that; that's like my favourite thing," she said.

" ... I never thought of becoming a model. I always wanted to be so many things, like a teacher at one point, then a registered nurse. But people were always saying, 'oh, my God you look like a model' and that sort of thing. So one thing led to another and one day I decided to enter the competition," she said.

Sunna Gutshalk is definitely on the rise, but she still sees herself as "just a girl who grew up in Westmoreland."

"I don't think my success has changed me. It has made me accomplish new things and see that there is more to come and be positive about," she said.

Sunna says though she loves modelling, it's still a difficult job. "It's long, tough and it's a lot of hard work and dedication. But I thank God for everything He's done ... My advice for the young females and males is that education is the key and if modelling is a passion and they are willing to work hard, a lot of doors can be opened from one thing. But they have to be brave in order to accomplish it," she said.

Though Sunna has appeared in many campaigns, she says she would love to land one for Lancome cosmetics. "I just have a passion for make-up ads. I love clothing ads, but I have a passion for seeing a girl wearing some good make-up or lip gloss in these ads," Sunna said.

She says she brings something unique to the industry and thus far this distinctiveness has been her asset. "I have a very good profile, in terms of my skin colour and my image and I photograph really well. So that is always a plus in the industry," she said.
