Here's how to apply for a UK visa
published: Wednesday | June 15, 2005

YOU MUST have a valid passport. Please make sure that there is enough space to insert a visa;

You must have a fully completed and signed application form. The type of application form that you complete depends on the type of visa that you are applying for. Ensure that you complete the correct form. Remember to read the form carefully; make sure that you fill out every section which is relevant to the type of visa you are applying for. Don't forget to sign it;

It is important that you write your contact details on your application form, including your email address, or your cellphone number. This is to facilitate easy contact by sending an email, or a text message, if the U.K. High Commission wants to book you an interview. If you do not have either an email address or a cellphone, you must enter another contact telephone number.

You must have a recent passport sized colour photo. This must be on a white background, and should be glued to the application form. Do not staple the photo onto the form;

Ensure that you have the correct fee. As of July 1, 2005, the fee for a six-month visiting visa will be increased from £36 to £50 ($5,550). Long-term visas for stays terminating more than six months, including student visas, work permit holders and holiday makers, will increase to £85 ($9,435). The fee for obtaining a settlement visa will remain unchanged at £85.

In addition to the above requirements;

You must include full supporting documents with your application, as the British High Commission does not interview everyone who applies for a visa. The visa officer will make a decision based solely on your application form and the other documents you send in. This means that if you don't send any supporting evidence, or if the papers you send aren't comprehensive, it is likely to affect the outcome of your application. Make sure that you include all supporting papers with your application, and don't send or fax any papers separately.

The documents should relate to you and also your sponsors if they are paying for some or all of your visit. Do not send passports (other than the one you wish to travel on); original birth or marriage certificates; land titles; or other irreplaceable documents. The British High Commission will not hold itself responsible for security of the documents or for returning them to you. Good quality photocopies are acceptable.

Everyone's circumstances are different. To help the visa officers make a decision, you must ensure that you show them as much evidence as you can of your personal circumstances. This includes your employment; studies; financial circumstances; any assets that you own; details of travel outside Jamaica; details of your family members in Jamaica and overseas. In the event that someone else is paying for your trip, or sponsoring you in another way, you are required to submit the same kind of information relating to that person too.

Submit supporting information with letters or declarations in support of an application, as visa officers will need such information as required by the U.K. immigration law.
