Enforce carnal abuse law
published: Wednesday | June 15, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS with great pleasure that I welcome the news that charges have been laid against four persons for the abuse of children in children's homes and places of safety.

However, I am puzzled as to why it took so long to charge these people, and why only four persons? The government must compensate these children for their pain and trauma and put appropriate measures in place to stop and prevent the abuse of our children in these institutions.

This huge step forward in protecting our children must be followed by another gigantic step in protecting children outside of these institutions who are sexually abused on a daily basis and nothing is done to the perpetrators. These children are impregnated by men who are sometimes old enough to be their fathers, and to add insult to injury, these men are allowed to go free while these children are left with the responsibility of rearing a child on their own. The law on carnal abuse must be enforced and these men must be prosecuted and convicted. Enough is enough!

I am, etc.,
