Suggestions for cutting crime, violence
published: Wednesday | June 15, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WOULD suggest government cut its enormous taxes on the people, while the Private Sector cut its enormous profit margin on goods sold to the people. Government should stop hiring retired, rejected politicians as consultants. Private Sector must pay better salaries to workers.

The Government should cut the salaries of the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Governor of the Bank of Jamaica, the head of JAMPRO, the head of HEART. Take over the Lotto gambling and direct the $8-billion a year profit to education.

The government should start an islandwide cleaning up of all areas; clean all gullies, drains, byways and dredges, watershed areas, pay good wages to all the youths employed in all these activities; clean beaches, train rivers, patch potholes. Increase police pay, take the young men off the streets and walls with employment. Try this and see if it will lessen the murder and crime rate. I think it could or will.

I am, etc.,
