THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE RECENT upsurge of outrage about the gun crimes and the violence in our country is quite laudable and gives reason for hope. However, I have been insisting, and do so once again, that one of the first things we must do is to stop the illegal guns from coming to our country. Is it that we cannot do it? Or is it that we just don't have the will, or resources, to do it? Either way, shall we just call our efforts an exercise in futility?
What about the sources of these illegal guns and ammunition? The countries from which they come, can they not do anything? What about our ports? Our customs officers? Our coast guards? Why have they been so ineffective in curtailing the flow? Is it that they don't know how to do their jobs? Or have they all been so corrupted? We need answers.
I no longer feel relieved when I hear about guns and ammunition being 'taken off the streets', because many more are coming in at a rapid rate! As I keep saying, get the right persons for the job, or if we don't have them here, get them from elsewhere.
People with murderous intent may not be curtailed by lack of weapons, but at least it will be much more difficult for them to carry out their dastardly deeds if the weapons are not readily available. Stop the guns from coming ... now!
I am, etc.,
