Internet specialist Sandor Panton of Top5Jamaica.Com, in association with the Gleaner Online, guides you through what's new, cool and interesting on the Internet.
From Jamaica to the wider Caribbean and the rest of the World, this is the 'Week on the Web'.
With over 90 million Internet users, China is second only to the United States in terms of the sheer size of their online population (number of Internet users).
The public media in China has long been controlled by the Government, but the advent of the Internet and its anonymity has made it difficult for the State to 'police' the Web.
So China has been in the news in a big way over the past few weeks, as the Government recently announced that all China-based blogs and websites must register the complete identity of the person with responsibility for the site.
The deadline for compliance with this order is June 30. Sites and blogs which fail to comply will be closed, and commercial publishers and advertisers already face the prospect of a J$7.3 million fine.
For a long time, the Government there has required all major commercial websites to register, so as to 'take responsibility' for their Internet content, however this is the first time that private, non-commercial bloggers or websites are being required to do the same.
Still in China, and specifically in the city of Shanghai, an online gamer was recently sentenced to death for the murder of another online gamer in October 2004.
In China and globally, online gaming is serious business for many of the participants, and in this instance, one had apparently loaned the other a 'virtual sword' for the online game Legend of Mir 3.
The borrower sold the sword to someone else for approximately US$870, and the lender tried to get it back (or the sale proceeds) but had no legal recourse, as he was told by authorities that such virtual items are not protected by Chinese property laws.
The lender then took matters into his own hands and stabbed the borrower to death. Although sentenced to death by the courts, the lender could have his sentence commuted to life imprisonment if he behaves well in prison.
