SMALL COMPANIES need to organise themselves to play a bigger role in the region, says James Moss-Solomon, newly-elected president of the Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce (CAIC).
The Caribbean Single Market and Economy is opening up a new economic space for Caribbean enterprises in an increasingly competitive global market. But companies have to ready themselves to take advantage of the new opportunities, he said in an interview.
"Large companies are doing a lot more things together," he told Wednesday Business. "There are more joint ventures and strategic arrangements."
This has to be emulated by smaller companies if they are to remain competitive, he said. "They have a lot of opportunities to get bigger and to take on a national role."
Medium-size companies need to organise themselves to take on regional markets and larger ones to take on global markets.
"I would like to challenge companies to form themselves into units capable of accessing these markets," he said. "We can learn a lot simply by looking at what is going on around us."
The CAIC is a regional organisation which serves the Caribbean private sector. A vice-president of the
organisation for the last two years, Mr. Moss-Solomon was elected to the top spot earlier this month.
