The Editor Sir,
As a college level graduate (agriculture), it's quite distressing that after more than a year of actively seeking employment, including at the Ministry of Agriculture, no opening can be found. Yet, according to the news, a government entity doles out $44 million for equipment use in one contract, to one contractor. (Multiply this several times in other cases of squandering taxpayers' money).
While it was necessary work, how was such a ridiculous costing arrived at, was the job tendered? And, in the real world, what is the true cost of the work? $40 million could have, for a year, employed 30 of the number of college graduates still to find employment. Then, in the same day, one reads the Gleaner story, "Shaw wants Gov't to account for missing $26.5 billion".
While the anointed few enjoy the milk and honey, others like myself who have an education and skill to offer to national development are left to chew on bitter herbs. Wouldn't it serve the country better that the Works Ministry/NWA own the type of equipment, cutting cost drastically, so that more qualified persons, especially the young and educated, can be employed into national service?
We have been seeing wanton and reckless waste under this watch, even as the Prime Minister assured it is not corruption. And, the sad thing is, when the next party comes to power, the same thing happens with different people.
Take an unprejudiced look world over; this is how Black people run their governments, inequitably and curry-favouring some.
I am, etc.,
