Loved ones mourn cop
published: Thursday | May 5, 2005

WHEN JOSEPHINE Watson heard the radio bulletin that a policeman was killed at the Cross Roads Police Station yesterday morning, she immediately thought of Canute Brown, the 63-year-old District Constable with whom she shared a common law union for the past nine years.

"Mi sey, 'Lawd, a wonda iffa Mr. Brown', and my daughter called his cellular number and there was no response, and afterwards wi call the station and that's how wi hear," Ms. Watson told The Gleaner.

The couple's relationship bore no children but Mr. Brown, who is originally from St. Ann's Bay, had several offsprings. One of them, 27-year-old Peter Brown, was at the Cross Roads Police Station yesterday receiving counselling from a member of the Police Chaplaincy Unit.

Fighting back tears, the slightly built Mr. Brown said he 'grew up' at the Cross Roads Police Station. Over the years, he said he developed a strong bond with his father.
