CABLE AND Wireless Jamaica believes it owns the copyright to its customer database. The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) disagrees.
Following an OUR decision that the company did not have the copyright control, the company yesterday filed a claim in the Supreme Court against the OUR decision, Wednesday Business was reliably informed.
Copyright is the ownership of an intellectual property with the owner having the exclusive right to print, distribute, and copy the work, and permission must be obtained by anyone else to reuse the work in these ways.
With Cable & Wireless having the island's only directory service, the OUR decided in 2002 that the company had to provide access to its listings to other companies at a reasonable cost.
It also decided that the company had to ensure the privacy of its customer information and add to its database information provided by its competitors.
