THE EDITOR, Sir:
ABORTION IS an issue that is usually shied away from as it is raised in any discussion. But whether we like it or not, this is a topic for much discussion today (in our troubled society), as it can be classified as one of the most cruel crimes that mankind has ever had the knowledge to commit.
According to the Pocket Oxford Dictionary, abortion is "natural or (esp.) induced expulsion of a foetus from the womb before it is able to survive independently". So abortion is the removal of foetus from its environment (the womb) which is necessary for its survival, for causes such as 'not being ready for the responsibility', 'females being ashamed because they're either teenagers or they're unmarried', and unbelievably, 'women's right'.
MURDER AND MAYHEM
With all this thinking, no wonder there is so much murder and mayhem, because this form of destroying innocent lives is acceptable for countries like the U.S.A. and Great Britain, which has such a great influence on us, and our youth in general. If people show they have no regard for these guiltless lives by prematurely cutting them off, can we then expect any more regard for them taking ours which are blameworthy?
What is a life and when does it commence? Is it after it has emerged from a womb or prior to this event? According to the Pocket Oxford Dictionary, life is "capacity for growth, functional activity, and continual change until death." A foetus is formed from the fertilisation of a female ovary by a male's sperm. From fertilization, there is capacity for growth, functional activity, and continual change from the first nine months through to the individual's entire life until his/her death. Therefore, the notion by some erudite individuals, that before a child emerges from the womb it is not a life, can be totally disregarded.
THE VIRGIN MARY
Can you imagine, just for argument's sake, if 'The Virgin Mary' was born in modern times and was still expected to carry the Holy Child, whose conception was made possible by the Holy Spirit, and she had decided to go the route of abortion 'fi tek shame out o' har yeye'? I guess we would never have the chance of being redeemed by the blood of the Holy Lamb of God, now would we?
There are some things that need no question of right or wrong because we just know that they are wrong! The laws of nature show that abortion is wrong; in fact, it is an evil crime against humanity. Where would all the great people this world has seen be and what good would they have done had their mothers chosen to terminate them before they had the chance to function actively in society and make their mark? What sometimes seems like adversity, if we just wait, trust God and have faith in Him, we see that at its end, is success.
I am, etc.,
