The JPS and overcharging
published: Saturday | March 12, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT AMAZES me that we the Jamaican people allowed the JPS and the OUR to get away with the results of the investigation in the overcharging of the JPS. customers. The findings blamed the meter readers all over the island, who for some reason, all went amuck after Hurricane Ivan, submitting erroneous readings.

How can independent meter readers all over the island, submit wrong readings over the same time period?

What surprises me further is the fact that the OUR accepted this result. The meter readers union came to their defence, requesting that JPS step up and exonerate the meter readers. This JPS later did, apparently with much hesitation, which in essence nullifies the results of the investigation. Who carried out the investigation? Was it the OUR or JPSCO?

What really irks me, is that the OUR at this time, is demanding that the customers be remunerated and has not addressed the fact that something went amuck in the JPS billing system, and that it could happen again and that the possibility exists that it could have been happening all along.

I get the feeling that the OUR is a bunch of well-paid people, in an almost gentleman's club setting, that occasionally wakes up and makes a few ready-made statements to the public to appear as though they were working all along.

I am, etc.,
