Unsanitary Old Harbour market ordered closed
published: Saturday | March 12, 2005

SPANISH TOWN:

THE ST. Catherine Health Department has given verbal notice to the St. Catherine Parish Council for the closure of the Old Harbour market as of Monday because of the unsanitary conditions that now exist at the facility.

According to Roy Crooks, chief public health inspector for St. Catherine, the sewage treatment plant has been out of commission for over a year now.

He reported that, despite repeated warnings, the St. Catherine Parish Council seemed to be dragging its feet, while the stench that emanates from the market continues without any redress.

Mr. Crooks was advised, however, that the valve, bearings and seals that the pump needed to function properly was now at the wharf in Kingston and, according to the Secretary/Manager of the council, Michael Morris, money has been identified for the clearance of the spare parts.

However, the public health inspector insisted that the order for closure of the market will remain in force until the health conditions are improved.
