Project to revive ginger production
published: Saturday | March 12, 2005

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

ROGER CLARKE, minister of agriculture, said there was a high demand for Jamaican ginger on the export market and urged farmers of James Mountain, St. Catherine, who are involved in the Ginger Revolving Project, to continue the hard work as it was a step in the right direction to take the crop back to the top.

Minister Roger Clarke was guest speaker at a ceremony sponsored by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) on Wednesday, where Wilfred Edwards became the first of 26 farmers to receive assistance in planting one square of ginger. He was also given 150lb of ginger seedlings which he will return to RADA.

According to Andrew Carty, the RADA parish manager, each square is expected to yield a maximum of 1,200 lb. However, he said this could vary due to soil preparation and water. Mr. Edwards was branded a success as he yielded 750 lb of ginger from one side of his plot.
