Students and teachers from some 18 schools across the island attended the ceremony, which saw the competition's 10 sponsors in attendance. A range of prizes including overseas trips, weekends at local hotels, educational supplies, gift packages, beverages and computer equipment, are in store for the competition's outstanding individuals and schools. These are being given courtesy of Cable and Wireless, AAMM Cooperative Credit Union, Kraft Foods, Sangster's Book Stores, Air Jamaica, SuperClubs, Food For The Poor, One Stop Computers and Bigga Soft Drinks.
The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) is also supporting the venture and will be assisting in judging the entries, while Power 106 will be doing live broadcasts from the winning schools.
ENTHUSED ABOUT STARTING OWN BUSINESSES
At the end of the competition launch, many students and teachers expressed their enthusiasm about developing their own businesses, and saw the competition as a practical training ground for such ventures. To date some 50 schools have registered for the competition.
The competition will involve school teams developing business projects and keeping the public abreast of their progress via free website space being provided by golocaljamaica.com. It will
culminate in April 2005. Golocaljamaica.com is a Gleaner Company website.
