Bridgeport, C'down set for cracker
published: Saturday | October 23, 2004

CAMPERDOWN and Bridgeport head a Walker Cup double-header at Ferdie Neita Park today beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Wolmer's Boys and Spanish Town High meet in the curtain-raiser at 1:00 p.m.

Stakes are high for the knock-out title which is contested by the eight schools with the best record in the first round of the Manning Cup.

The most consistent team this year, Camperdown, will have to contend with all of Portmore when they travel to Ferdie Neita Park to face that town's favourite team. Camperdown's impressive run of nine consecutive wins before losing to Meadowbrook last week is the best this season. Only champs Excelsior have a better record, winning six and drawing two. They are yet to lose a game.

DOUBLE WIN

Bridgeport won the double in 2001 when they took home the Walker and Manning Cup and since their inception in schoolboy football they have been a top contender. However, their weaknesses have been exposed this year, particularly in their backline which has seemed questionable. But their coach Anthony Patrick maintains the strong point is their strike force.

"If my team starts to score then all the other teams in the competition are going to have to worry," Patrick warned.

"We've played tough teams in the first round and what we have learnt is that we need to knock the ball around and be more patient. Tomorrow's game is more mental than anything else," he added.

Camperdown's talent have been questioned. Some pundits reason that the opponents in their first round group were simply no match and as a result Camperdown looked better than they really are.

"They are coached by Barrington Gaynor and with him comes hard running. They will run at us hard and they have at least one very skilled midfielder. Their backline also holds up well so it will be tough," Patrick said.
