Giving respect where it is due
published: Saturday | October 23, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS in Jamaica for the Hero/Heritage Weekend just past and I must say kudos to the authorities for keeping up this relevant and important celebration. The various events including the honour to our olympians and Paralympians was very classy.

I would request that Aileen Bailey's speech on behalf of the olympians need to be published in its entirety. Finally, in travelling to Montego Bay from Falmouth, I was most disturbed by the sight of our National Flag being flown at a gas station. My countrymen, especially our business and government folks, we cannot display a tattered, frayed and dirty looking flag. This is our most cherished symbol, we need to give it the respect it is due.

To our students and citizens, especially those who were at the William Knibb service, quite a number of you need to know that we should stand at attention and not fidget around while our National Anthem is being played or sung.

I am, etc.,
