KINGSTON AND St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League champs Santos will be aiming to seek redemption against Wadadah today in the National Premier League (NPL) play-offs at the Bell Chung Stadium commencing at 3:30 p.m.
In the other play-off match, Arlington and St. George's will meet at Prison Oval, also at 3:30 p.m.
All four teams are vying for the two coveted spots in next season's Wray & Nephew National Premier League.
SAME POSITION LAST YEAR
Santos, who were in the same position last year but failed to advance, have gotten off to a slow start. In two games they have only secured one point, losing one game and drawing the other.
St. George's of Portland defeated the KSAFA kings 2-1 after they drew 1-1 with South Central Confederation champs Arlington.
Santos' coach Carlton 'Spanner' Dennis said returning to the confederation league next year is not an option for his club as that would be a disappointment.
"We've done everything they've asked of us in the confed. We don't want to be back here next year playing confed again," Dennis said.
"We are hungry to get to the Premier League. We're ready to move on."
Dennis said he is not panicking about the early results because his team is one of the best in overcoming adversities.
"Most of the time when our backs are against the wall that is when we perform best," he stated.
Santos and Wadadah were touted as the two teams to take the vacant NPL spots and with both teams at the bottom with a point each, Santos are looking to separate themselves.
"Both of us have been struggling so probably class will tell and we'll have to pick up ourselves and get it together. We are looking to bounce back on Sunday and take it from there," Dennis added.
"We are targeting the games to see where we can pick up points and move on. We haven't been playing bad. We're just not converting our chances," he pointed out.
ADVANCE MENTALITY
Like Santos, Arlington have a must advance mentality. They are tied with St. George's on four points but have a superior goal difference with four to St. George's one.
"We are destined to make the NPL next season," assured Arlington coach Oneil Thomas. "We're coming all out to win this game. We're focused and only winning is on our mind right now."
Thomas said that his team is well-equipped with talent but it is discipline that will be the chariot of success.
"We have great unity and team discipline. Our strength lies in our team discipline," he said.
