published: Sunday | November 23, 2003

NETTLEFORD

PROFESSOR REX Nettleford's acclaimed book 'Caribbean Cultural Identity', was recently relaunched at the Institute of Jamaica. First published in 1978, Professor Nettleford once again brings focus to the issue of cultural identity and its influence in Caribbean integration and the socio-economic conditions of Caribbean nations.

Professor Nettleford analyses the dynamics of cultural development in the Caribbean region. Among other issues, he brings to the fore discussions on the cultural dimension of development and its significance in preserving our cultural values.

On the current status of Caribbean identity, Professor Nettleford says: "The vault-like ascent by the society from slavery into freedom and then from colonialism into constitutional independence is yet to be matched by a corresponding progress from cultural inferiority of the vast majority to cultural self confidence."

Rex Nettleford is the author of several other books and articles including 'Mirror, Mirror, Manley and the New Jamaica' and 'Dance Jamaica Cultural Definition and Artistic Discovery.' He has been the recipient of numerous awards among which is the Gold Musgrave Award from the Institute of Jamaica where recently, a plaque bearing his image was mounted.

Professor Nettleford is widely known for his intellectual achievements and his outstanding skills as a dancer choreographer. He is founder, artistic director and choreographer of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC), and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the consideration of the overall cultural development of Jamaica and the Caribbean.
