Half-Way Tree clarification
published: Tuesday | August 26, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I DO not wish to prolong the Half-Way Tree saga, but I do wish to refer to the letter appearing in The Gleaner of Thursday, 14th August, on the subject.

I wish to thank the writer for her interesting research on the matter. I think, however, subject to correction, that her findings describe accurately Tom Cringle's Cotton Tree on the Spanish Town Road near the Ferry. That tree was cut down a few years ago to facilitate road works. I also believe that there may be a drawing or photograph somewhere in our archives which shows the soldiers parading under that tree.

Trees are very prominent in our culture and our place names and even in our music and song, ("Under de coconut tree").

I am, etc.,

ELSIE SAYLE
