Good behaviour in critical times
published: Tuesday | August 26, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE HISTORICAL "blackout" which occurred in a wide cross section of the United States of America and Canada recently (14/8/03) has left several lessons for us to learn.

I was vastly impressed at the behaviour of the American citizens, especially those trapped in the subways. It was unbelievable and amazing even to see how patiently they sat, waiting beneath the earth for a chance to get back on top of the earth again. I daresay this must be one of the reasons they are said to be patriotic.

I wonder, could we in Jamaica ever behave like this in a moment of crisis? We need to educate our people about how to behave in critical times instead of us stampeding and demonstrating.

I am, etc.,
