FOUR PERSONS, including two from one family, were killed yesterday in a motor vehicle accident on the Mount Rosser main road near the St. Ann/St. Catherine border.

This, after the minibus in which they were travelling crashed into an International tipper truck. Two children were among those who died.

Three of those killed have been identified as driver, Christopher Segree, age unknown; Janel Junior, three years old and Marcia Grant, 33 years old. Ms Grant, is the aunt of Janel. The other child remains unidentified.

According to Corporal Encil Bent, investigating officer, the accident occurred about 10:45 a.m. when the white Toyota Hiace mini-bus, registered PA 7636 travelling from Ocho Rios, attempted to overtake another vehicle and slammed into the truck, registered 7543 EB. The truck was travelling towards Ocho Rios.

The bus apparently veered into the opposite lane and collided head on with the truck. The four who received multiple injuries died on the spot Corporal Bent said.

A Gleaner news team which went to the scene saw scores of curious onlookers staring in disbelief at the four bodies trapped inside the twisted and crumpled remains of the mini-bus.

Clayton Junior, father of Janel, who was among those looking at the tragedy, cried openly. "I have been crying from 10 o'clock, I really can't cry any more." he said.

He said the three were returning from Montego Bay, St. James where his sister Marcia had gone to visit her husband. They were killed a short distance from where they lived in Ewarton, St. Catherine.

Special Constable C. Williams, attached to the Harmon Barracks police said he was about four cars behind the truck when the bus which was travelling very fast, went around another vehicle and collided with the truck.

The police were unable to confirm the number of persons injured in the accident, but persons on the scene said there were more than 10 people in the bus. The driver of the truck was among those taken to hospital for treatment.

Police statistics indicate that 277 persons have died from 201 motor vehicle accidents since the start of the year.
