B'dos take command
published: Sunday | April 6, 2003

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP):

BARBADOS MOVED a step closer to the regional cricket treble yesterday after taking a commanding first-innings lead over Jamaica on the third day of the Carib Beer International Challenge final.

Jamaica, replying to Barbados' first innings of 369, were bowled out for 184 after resuming on 79 for one.

Fast bowler Corey Collymore led the rout for the limited overs Red Stripe Bowl winners and recently crowned Carib Beer Cup four-day Caribbean champions. The 25-year-old claimed five for 44 off 21 overs, while left-armer Pedro Collins took three for 36 off 15 overs.

Forced to follow on after trailing by 185, the visitors showed some fight through a forthright approach from their batsmen the second time around.

Brenton Parchment led the way with a scintillating 82, his second half century of the match, as Jamaica closed at 166 for three in their second innings.

The tall right-hander smashed 11 fours and two cover-driven sixes off 79 balls.

Fellow opener Leon Garrick chipped in with an unbeaten 56 (five fours) as the pair added 111 for the first wicket.

Hurley struck twice and Collymore added the third wicket as Barbados stalled Jamaica's progress toward the end of the day.

Philo Wallace clung on to a firm Parchment drive at short leg to claim the right-hander 18 runs short of a maiden first-class century.

Wavell Hinds (two) and Marlon Samuels (13) fell cheaply. Hinds lofted a catch to deep cover off Hurley, while Samuels edged a cut to the wicketkeeper off Collymore.

Earlier, Barbados took the last nine Jamaican wickets for 68 runs as their first innings collapsed.
