HOLMWOOD TECHNICAL High's girls and Kingston College's boys took the major titles at the 2003 VMBS/ISSA Boys and Girls Championships at the National Stadium last night.

Holmwood, out of Christiana in Manchester and coached by Maurice Wilson, won the prestigious title for the first time holding off a persistent challenge from St. Jago High throughout the four-day meet.

At press time last night, the new champions had amassed 258 points, 34.5 clear of St. Jago on 223.5. Edwin Allen 177, defending champions Vere Technical 168.5 and St. Andrew High 135 completed the top five.

It was a virtual romp for KC who took charge of the boys' race from the second day and kept going further and further away. At press time, with only the Class 1 4x100m and the 4x400m to go, KC were leagues ahead on 230 points, JC were second with 150, Calabar 122, St. Jago 120 and Ardenne 73.

The final day of the championships was highlighted by two magical record runs by World Junior Championships 200m gold medallist Usain Bolt of William Knibb High School.

In what must go down as two of the best performances seen at the 93-year championships, Bolt obliterated the Class 1 400m and 200m records. It was a case of Bolt first and the rest nowhere in both events.

Drawn in lane six in the 400m, Bolt went out like a bullet and left the rest of the field in his wake. Among the casualities was defending champion Jermaine Gonzales who pulled up with a cramp 150m out. Bolt, still four months short of his 17th birthday, stopped the clock at a magnificent 45.35 seconds, the first sub-46 400m in the history of the championships.

In the 200m Bolt surprised even himself with a record 20.25, well below the previous mark of 20.79 set by Vere's Steve Mullings last year. Jermaine Barton was second in 21.25 and Camperdown's Orion Nicely third in 21.36.

Several athletes completed doubles yesterday. Kingston College's Andre Wellington, who won the Class 2 100m in a record 10.71 seconds on Friday night, came back with another brilliant run in yesterday's 200m final. He clocked 21.59 to erase the 21.61 set by St . George's Tesfa Latty in 2001. Toussaint Crooks of Ardenne took second in 21.90 while third was Calabar's Josef Robertson in 22.00.

Winston Barnes, the Class 3 100m record holder, easily took the 200m in 22.69 from Ardenne's Garfield Biggs, 23.00, and his teammate Marlon Richards 23.07.

Class 1 strongman Kimani Kirton of KC added the shot put title to the discus crown he took on Thursday. Kirton failed by five centimetres to break the record, winning with a throw of 18.12m. His teammate Fabian Morgan was well back with 16.44m and St. Jago's Aundrae Clarke third with 15.86m.

Among the girls, Nicola Legister of Camperdown High opened the afternoon's proceedings with victory in the Class 3 400m and came back two hours later to run away with the 800m title. Her winning times were 56.40 and 2:17.74 respectively.

In the Class 1 girls 200m St. Jago's Kerron Stewart, 23.50, held off Nickesha Anderson of Herbert Morrison, 23.57, and Manchester High's Sherone Simpson, 23.60, in a stirring three-way stretch battle.

The outstanding Holmwood pair, Sheryl Morgan and Aneisha McLaughlin also won two events.

Morgan, who successfully defended her 400m hurdle title on Friday, came back to take the Class 1 400m in a good 52.69 beating St. Elizabeth's Davita Prendergast, 53.74, and Vere Technical's Veronica Patterson 54.26.

McLaughlin took the 200m and 400m in Class 2. On both occasions she trounced the field winning by a long margin clocking 23.19 to win the 200m gold and 53.06 in the one lap event. The Holmwood team collected 16 valuable points in the event as Sonita Sutherland, 53.90, rallied bravely 40 metres out to just edge Vere's Annabella Reid, 53.93.

Tacius Golding's Venessa Whittle produced two middle distance gems to take the difficult 1,5\00m, 800m double in Class 2. Yesterday Whittle, 2:09.15, fought off Holmwood Technical's Celia Whyte, 2:09.67, for the 800m title.
