SUPREME VENTURES Limited (SVL), in its support of research and technological development in Jamaica, sponsored the first Research & Technology Day Exhibition at the University of Technology (UTech).
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Phillip Paulwell, Minister of Commerce, Science and Technology, made reference to several encouraging developments in research and technology, particularly the discovery of a new drug to treat threadworm by Jamaican, Dr. Wayne Forbes, as well as research carried out at the Northern Caribbean University in Mandeville, which shows that sorrel could be a treatment or cure for certain types of cancer.
As sponsors of the event, Supreme Ventures's Public Relations & Marketing Manager, Suzette Smellie-Tomlinson, highlighted the importance of technology to the efficient and effective delivery of the Company's Cash Pot, Lucky5 and Dollaz! lottery games which, she noted, was provided for SVL by internationally renowned technology service provider GTECH.
Supreme Ventures' involvement in UTech's Research & Technology Day is indicative of the company's commitment to encourage local and ongoing research and technological developments, which will no doubt continue to aid improvements in the social services, in particular healthcare and education, two of SVL's areas of corporate focus.
The Faculty of Engineering & Computing copped first place in the "Supreme Ventures Award for Best Faculty Exhibit", showcasing technology on the treatment of waste-water, while the Faculty of Built Environment won the runner-up award for their presentation on the impressive Greater Allman Town Redevelopment Plan, which will form a part of the renewal programme for inner cities and serve as a model for other communities.
The University of Technology is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. The university, which was formally accorded university status on September 1, 1995, boasts a student population in excess of 6,000 and offers over 100 programmes at the certificate, diploma and degree levels.
