Are we serious about curbing the drug trade?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I REFER to the report in the Saturday, July 20, 2002, issue of The Gleaner on the ganja found in a 40ft container at Berth 11 of the Kingston Container Terminal (incorrectly referred to as "Kingston Wharf"). It would seem that this is an excellent opportunity for the police to do some real detective work and make some arrest of the persons involved.

I think I am correct in saying that there have been many similar drug finds at Port Bustamante (Kingston Wharves and the Kingston Container Terminal) with very few arrests and even less convictions in the courts.

There was one case some months ago when the persons involved were caught in the act and several arrests were made. Since then we have heard nothing more. It would be worthwhile for you to make some enquiries and let the public know where that case has reached in the criminal justice system.

Going back to the recent find of over two tons of ganja, I think the Minister of National Security, the Commissioner of Police, and the other senior officers involved in the investigation should make it a test case.

This will be a good test of whether or not the will to really do something to stop the drug trade is present or it is just a lot of talk.

I am, etc.,
