Austrian Mlynarik meet German Kas in final

WESTERN BUREAU:

TOP SEED Zbynek Mlynarik of Austria and seventh seed German Christopher Kas will meet in the final of the third International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament at the Swept Away Resort in Negril this morning at 9:30.

The final was scheduled to be played yesterday but was put off until today after heavy afternoon showers just after the semi-finals washed out the rest of the day's proceedings.

Mlynarik booked his place in the final after an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Dutchman Fred Hemmes and Kas upset second seed Herbert Wiltschnig of Austria 1-6, 6-0, 7-5.

Meanwhile, the doubles title went to the Greek pair of Nikos Rovas and Anastacios Vasillidadis who beat the Dutchmen Steven Byl and Ruben De Kleijn 6-3, 7-6 yesterday.

The Greeks took home US$945 while the Dutch pair shared US$495.

Much more will be at stake today in the singles final with the winner assured of US$1,950 and the runner up US$1,350 plus important ITF points.

After his brilliant comeback win yesterday, Kas was eager to get on with the match, asking officials "can we play the finals in about 30 minutes?"

The first two sets in the semi-finals between Kas and Wiltschnig failed to give spectators a preview of what was to come in the exciting third set.

The big Austrian seemed well on his way to a win as both men held serve until the crucial 10th game when Kas seemed to find a new gear, breaking Wiltschnig at love on his way to winning the final three games.

Kas' power surge saw him drop a mere five points in the final four games as Wiltschnig smashed his racquet in frustration after the match.
